Ordesa - Sulzmann/ Parricelli/ Wheeler
You might have expected a restrained and delicate ECM-like jazz chamber music to be produced by
this trio, and when you hear John Parricelli's first wispy guitar harmonics and Stan Sulzmann's
airy soprano-sax lines on the opener, with Wheeler's plummy brass sound sliding in underneath,
you know you're right. But this is a completely distinctive record within this genre of
patiently-unfolding small group contemperary jazz, with Sulzmann having rarely sounded better,
the textures constantly shifting, the themes constantly absorbing, the recording warm and
sympathetic. All the pieces are by the band members, except for Strayhorn's 'A Flower is a
Lovesome Thing.'
